I've watched over her since she was an egg on a le

I've watched over her since she was an egg on a leaf in my yard.

I kept the leaf in water for a few days until she hatched. I moved the microscopic caterpillar to some fresh milkweed, stored in a vase inside a mesh cage.

I carried the cage outside in the morning, and back inside a screened-in area at night. Butterflies raised entirely indoors with constant light and temperatures develop no sense of direction.

Caterpillars left to their own devices have a very low survival rate due to birds, wasps, and other predators. Mesh cages left outdoors overnight get ransacked by raccoons. I found this out the hard way. ☠️

I kept the milkweed replenished, and regularly cleaned the cage (caterpillars leave a LOT of poop) as it grew. Once it formed a chrysalis, I made sure it received the occasional mist of water for 2 weeks until the butterfly completed its metamorphosis.

She made it. Here she is...and there she goes! ❤️

As a Realtor, sometimes my friends become clients,

As a Realtor, sometimes my friends become clients, and more often than not, my clients become friends.

This is one of the happiest and most unique stories I have about one of these client/friend relationships.

Several years ago, I came home on a snowy December day to find a handwritten note in my mailbox. It said that my Christmas decorations made her smile every time she drove past my house, and she had a particular fondness for my Snoopy. She said she'd wanted to tell me so for years!

Her card was signed with her name and address (just down the street), so I wrote back on a Christmas card, and left some chocolates in her mailbox.

Thus began a kind of pen pal relationship that progressed to occasional in-person visits. I took her flowers from my garden and some jam in the summers, and she popped chocolates in my mailbox.

Two months ago she called me with the heartbreaking news that she'd been suddenly widowed. She wondered if I could help her to find a new home near some family in Guelph, and sell her home in Toronto. Yes I could, and we did it in record time!

Through this process we've become quite close, and discovered how much we have in common. This includes a deep love of gardening and nature (and music, books, travel - and beer).

It was such a joy to take over my butterfly cage and share the release of two monarchs with her today. These little creatures are such a source of delight. ❤️

A few years ago, my client had her fireplace custom painted in her favourite colour.

She loves salmon pink. I had to break the news that many buyers would not.

She scoffed at the idea of changing it to white, but asked me the all-important question:

"Do you think it will help you find a buyer for this place?"

"Yes, I think it's important to remove as many objections as possible."

"Then do whatever you need to do, dear!" she told me without hesitation.

It's so gratifying when people ask me for advice, and take it. My client is 90 years old, and loves her house. However, she's already looking ahead to the fabulous new home we found for her.

This is going to be someone else's house now, and we're focused on the same goal....getting a new family into Leaside!

When I show properties to clients, we don't just look at the one for sale.

I peek over and through fences, walk around the corner, check out the park, come back at night, and so on.

You can't control who moves in beside you in the future, but you may want to avoid purchasing a home where the neighbours already give you the "ick".

While my clients were envisioning their cute patio with a barbecue and lounge chairs, I was scoping out the one next door that was littered with cigarette butts, bags of dog poop, and weeds.

It was an immediate no.

My main concern is not about making the sale - it's about making sure my clients will be happy in their new neighbourhood!

I'm a lucky woman to have as much love in my life as I do, and in the end that's all that really matters.

If I could tell my younger self one thing, I'd say stop being so damn afraid of making mistakes.

When I took a volunteer position as a regular "entertainer" at Belmont House (a lofty title for someone with average skills and crippling stage fright), I expected to overcome that fear.

Nope! But I kept going back anyway.

Even when someone opened a door, and a gust of wind blew all my carefully organized sheet music from the piano to the floor.

Even when two ladies sitting near me began to loudly critique my sweater as I played, no doubt thinking they were whispering.

Even when a retired piano teacher came up to tell me I was "a little heavy on the pedal" that night. She wasn't wrong.

And especially the time I was setting up and realized with horror that the great Maureen Forrester was there with her family. Talk about nerves. 🤦‍♀️

But what kept me going back were Millie, Harry, and the Reverend.

Millie was 102 when I met her, and had recently lost her eyesight. I visited her weekly to read her mail, play music, and talk. She told me stories about her life in Rosedale, her married life in Chicago during the 1929 crash, and surviving cancer at 97. She always offered me sherry, and I regret not taking her up on that.

Harry was a constant friendly face in the crowd. He would spontaneously burst into song, and in his late nineties not only didn't use a cane - he twirled me after every show.

Reverend Davidson's joy for life was palpable. He told great stories with an infectious smile, and always sat next to Harry on the sofa. I started coming early to join them in conversation about family, music, aging, and life.

I miss them.

I find posting on social media incredibly difficult. I don't like being the centre of attention, and really dislike being on camera. But history has taught me that interesting things happen when you face your fears.

When I host open houses, it's an amazing opportunity to speak directly with buyers. I'm not just hearing one person's perspective, I'm hearing dozens.

Two things I've been told repeatedly: they don't want to have to fix anything, and they want a bargain.

Your property has to look good to get them in the door, and it has to be great value to seal the deal.

The worst thing you can do in 2026 as a seller is hold on to 2022 prices.

We needed a week away after a challenging few months with our senior dog. I'm not sure which was harder, rehabbing my own knee surgery a few years ago, or helping with Henry's!

So grateful to Dr. Rabs and the team at Caledon Mountain Veterinary Hospital. They saved our dog, and provided outstanding care for him (and for us) every step of the way! ❤️
