Whether you’re a newcomer to Toronto, or a Torontonian considering moving to a new area of town, there is so much information available for you to explore!

As your Realtor® of choice, I have the experience to help you consider which neighbourhoods might be a great fit for you, but there are also amazing online tools. Depending on the source being used, the city of Toronto has somewhere between 140 and 240 different neighbourhoods, each with their own distinct personality and amenities!

As a quick way to dip your toe in the water, Toronto Life magazine offers a neighbourhood ranking tool. It provides a very brief overview of 140 areas, and grades them on features such as safety, diversity, education, access to entertainment, and so on. Don’t overlook the most important thing, which is a set of slider tools at the top where you can customize these attributes by what matters most to you, changing the order of rankings in real time!

To begin a deeper dive, you might be surprised to find out that Wikipedia is actually an excellent source of detailed Toronto neighbourhood information, organized by geographic area. They say there are 240 official and unofficial neighbourhoods within the city limits! We find it a more engaging tool because it comes complete with photographs and stories that round out the data. In addition to the demographics and points of interest, you can learn about the history, heritage, architecture, streets of note – or even discover sites of famous movie shoots!

Next up: if you’d like more information about the local small businesses available in each area, including types of restaurants and potential walkability to stores, then you might find the blogTO website helpful for this research. They offer an interactive map for a geographic fact-finding mission, or an alphabetical list of areas if you’ve already narrowed down your search. The thumbnail results and opportunity to see full articles with reviews and photos of each destination are superb for any of you who are also highly visual people!

If you are more of a “just the facts” kind of person, the City of Toronto website offers a map of 158 neighbourhoods, with detailed profiles and plenty of statistics. You can search by clicking on the map, typing in a neighbourhood name, or by typing in a specific address. Follow the menu options at the top of each profile to get a sense of the area’s income level, housing types and age of construction, diversity, and more!

Lastly, once you’ve got a particular area or property in mind, you might want to check out its Walk Score®. On a scale of 1-100, it will grade the location on how easy it is to walk to amenities such as stores, restaurants, and parks; how easy it is to get around by public transit; and how easy it is to get around by bicycle.

With all of these resources (and of course, me as your Realtor®), we will be sure to find you the perfect place to live!
